5 Fascinating Facts About Pirates!

Sorry to explode a couple of myths that we all believe about pirates, but…..

Did you know, that pirates did throw men overboard, but walking the plank was invented by Hollywood?

Probably, like I did as a child, I think we have all dreamt of finding a pirate treasure map. Well believe it or not,  no-one has ever found one. It is thought that pirates had too much fun spending their money to want to bury it!

Anyway, here are 5 more pirate facts:

1. Black Beard’s Castle is on the Caribbean island of St Thomas. 
2. The pirate flag is called the Jolly Rodger.
3. Pirates believed that it was was bad luck having women on board their ship.
4. Pirates thought they could improve their eyesight by wearing pierced earrings.
5. Pirates believed that whistling on a ship would ‘whistle up a storm’!

I think when my daughter and I play at pirates next time, I’ll still have a treasure map and walk the plank! It’s just too much fun!
