A browser cookie Shackleton Centennial sold for 1,400 euros

A cookie that the explorer Ernest Shackleton was an Antarctic expedition from 1907 to 1909 was sold to an anonymous collector of 1,250 pounds (1956 U.S. dollars, 1438 euros) at an auction organized on Thursday in London, Christie’s said.

The cookie, which did not reach its maximum estimated price of 1,500 pounds, was one of thousands that took Shackleton when he led the Nimrod Expedition.

Made especially for the British firm Huntley and Palmers, these cookies had a more consistent due to the addition of milk proteins to provide the necessary energy to the group during their journey.

The expedition came within 160 kilometers of the South Pole but was forced to turn around and during the return trip, the men had to settle for half portions so as not to starve.

In a particularly difficult time of the expedition, Shackleton, gave his share to a partner who then wrote in his diary: “This cookie was worth all the treasures.”

The cookie, which so far also belonged to a private collector, was found at a shelter in the base camp of the expedition.

In 2001, a cracker of another expedition of Shackleton reached a record high of 7637 at an auction organized by Christie’s as well.
