A Dying City

Here is an inside look at an American city that is dying fast. Detroit was once a great city and now it is a shell of it’s former self.

Basic city services are being cut though they could not meet the demand in the first place. Response time for the strapped police and fire departments is getting worse through no fault of their own. Police presence in the city has been a bit hit or miss for years. The city county workers are over worked and under paid. Now, they are facing lay offs and city furlough days.

Even the entertainment venues in the area are suffering. The State Fair is likely to have closed for the last time. The casinos that many hoped would help the city have faced many problems including bankruptcy. Most notably is the American Auto Show. It has been a city staple for many years and now faces a move to the suburbs.
No one seems to have a clear answer. One sure thing is that the city of yesteryear is gone and will never return. The people who are in Detroit need to think of a new city. It will have to be smaller, greener and denser.

The movie industry is starting to think of Detroit as a new place film. If the studios buy into the area that would create jobs and invite growth. It will also create another stable industry to replace the leaving auto companies.

Ford is still in the area and they have several stable employing activities. They have their manufacturing headquarters, testing facilities and their product development departments in and around Detroit. There are also entertainment facilities like an IMAX theater, a historical museum, and a historical village.

Many people would like to see the vacant land turned into greenways, community gardens, and other environmentally friendly spaces. The land should be made available at a low cost to the people living here to encourage gardening for food.

In order for any good to happen in the city, the residents need to take pride, stand up, and make changes. Too many people look away from crime, turn away the hungry, and suffer in silence. There needs to be a coming together of neighbors. Instead of just talking about what is wrong in the city, they must do something.

This is an important article. I recall, when Detroit was actually making huge headway in recovering from all the damage of the 60s and 70s riots.

The recovery was slow to be sure, but they were doing a great jobs in terms of revitalizing the city. If something isn’t done soon it will be the largest ghost town in the world.
