A Personal Anecdote of Rome, Italy – Il Gelato Di San Crispino

In the mid-July of 2010, I traveled to Rome, Italy. This is an anecdote of my experience.

In the latest hours of night, temptation draws me to the sweet, devilish desires that gravitate towards individuals with a sweet tooth and a knack for burning wallets. Of everything the world has to offer, however, San Crispino, an Italian gelato shop, will always hold the soft spot for desserts in my lustful heart.

A possessed set of feet direct the way forward to doors of ephemeral enlightenment, the entrance to my personal Earth’s Heaven. Bells hanging from each side of San Crispino emit mesmerizing sounds that take one’s breath away. Complex machinery materializes among a mass of people, who pack into the store in the same manner that fish filled Peter’s net. A man with an In-N-Out styled hat and a white apron caters to the “fish” here, announcing one question to every passing individual. “Do you know what you want?”

Cantaloupe gelato reigns supreme in the world of frozen desserts. In merely the first spoonful, three phases of flavor terminated in a manner modeled after the life of an atomic bomb. The cantaloupe sought guidance to touch down in the first phase. The second contained a literal explosion of cantaloupe goodness that spread through my mouth. The final flavor stage proceeded to be the dust and memory that remained after the explosion. When this form of gelato presents itself in a cup equivalent to the size of the average palm, there is no surprise in regretting such a brief burst of flavor. I wait with dimming hope for my next encounter in Il Gelato di San Crispino.
