Aboriginal Society

Just about aboriginal society.

Aboriginal Australians are the most disadvantaged in Australian society. One reason for this is that there is a much higher alcohol consumption rate in Aboriginal communities, furthermore Indigenous people are more susceptible to illness and accidents. Another point that supports this is that when the British invaded Australia the rules they forced upon the Aborigines affected their cultures, traditions and their nomadic lifestyle.

When the British arrived in Australia they brought with them drugs and illness including alcohol and tobacco.

Tobacco has now become one of the biggest killers in Aboriginal society and alcohol has plagued Indigenous people for centuries invoking anger and abuse.

In addition to this the British also introduced diseases, which in Britain were considered harmless. However small diseases such as the measles ran riot through Aboriginal communities killing an untold amount.

Another big contributing factor to why Indigenous Australians are more disadvantaged in modern society was the long period of relocation they had to endure. In this time whole communities were pushed out of their traditional lands to be put in reserves.

Also during this time all Aboriginal children with a European parent were taken from there mothers to be educated in missions these Aboriginals are now known as the stolen generation.

Furthermore, the British impacted heavily on Aboriginal cultures and traditions. Indigenous people were no longer aloud to be naked. Especially women whom had to were large British style dresses. British law also affected the way Indigenous people punished crimes within their own communities or even at all.

In conclusion, Aboriginal Australians are more disadvantaged in modern society because of wrongs committed against them in the past. Some racial barriers still exist towards indigenous people preventing them from being further accepted into white society. I don’t believe that until both white and black people drop and forgive any racial barriers which have prevented both our societies coming together as one.
