America The Beautiful
America was a country of unimagined beauty when these three little ships came scudding through a clear moon filled night in 1492.
Imagine the three little ships scudding through a clear moon filled night in 1492. Almost past hope that they would ever sight land. Sick, hungry and their strength given away to despair. They had been at sea for weeks and nothing but water in sight. Ninety men and boys who thought they would never see home again were ready to mutiny. It was the first attempt to cross the vast waters that were called the “Ocean Sea.”

Then by luck they sighted birds and knew land had to be near. It was October, the season when millions of birds have flown across the Gulf of Mexico since time memorial. Even so, the men were afraid and Columbus promised if land wasn’t sighted in three days they would turn back. The Pinta sighted a branch in the water and that night the sailors on the Santa Marie sang hymns. The Nina was the smallest ship and trailed behind the others.
About two o’clock in the morning Rodrigo de Triana lookout on the Pinto, saw something that looked like the gleam of a sandy cliff. “Tierra” ‘Tierra” he shouted. Captain Pinzon took a look to be sure it was land. Sure enough, he could see the gleam of the tall white cliffs before him. The ships largest canon was standing, primed and ready to be fired at the moment there was good news. The order was given and the canon was fired to alert the other ships.

Now imagine the land they were sailing toward. A land of pristine rivers, forests of ancient trees, animals without number, and red men who were sleeping peacefully in their beds who would know little peace once the Europeans stepped onto their shores. The white man had come to take both North and South America as his own. Columbus, himself could not have imagined the vast changes that would sweep over history. These changes would take over three hundred years but these three little ships that weathered the Ocean Sea would change the lives of the red man forever.
On that morning in October redwoods that were there when Christ walked the earth stood tall in their majesty and plains bursting with grass were grazed by herds of buffalo and elk. Giant grizzlies were lords of plains and mountains. Wolves, cougar, weasel, wildcat, lynx, and fox roamed the forests in profusion. Fish swam in the clear waters.

At this time, the great Iroquois leaders, Dekanawida and Hayowentha (whose name we know as Hiawatha) were establishing the League of the Iroquois, the Five Nations. The League was just beginning to develop its power when, on that fateful morning, the ship Pinta, far away in southern waters fired her canon announcing the sighting of the new land.

In fourteen hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue–I still remember that from first grade, 1964.
This was well-written with vivid descriptions.

Very evocative imagery about the great natural beauty of America. But I wonder what would the view of the people of Dekanawida and Hayowentha be about the events that followed.

And bringing with them the high technology, social, and political organization which would enable them to conqueor all that was before them. Indeed, it is a lesson to take heed of even in these times.

We destroy everything and demand that we own everything! England is just the same, and the countryside on our tiny island is disappearing fast!

Well written, very vivid images, you brought history to life. Unfortunately history is full of stories like this. Men have always wanted to conquer, expand their territory, and increase their wealth. Wonder what history would have been like if women ruled the world?

Indeed a thought provoking article. Often we associate the changes in the world with our own actions rather then the eventual journey of fate. The native Americans came the America’s several centuries earlier. Each one of them had a story just as each one of us does today. I sometimes marvel at the insignificance of us all in front of creation and its multitude diversity….
