Ancient Egypt

Egypt became a powerful kingdom about 5,000 years ago.

Its rulers were called pharahos. The ancient Egyptians built great cities,pyramids,statues and temples. Some of them can still be seen today. The ancient Egyptians used a kind of picturing-writing and made papers from papyrus and reeds.

Water works

The Egyptians used a machine called a Shaduf to lift water from river Nile. They needed water for their crops,because there was hardly any rainfall. Egypt is a baking-hot land with sandy deserts.

Marvellous mud

Floods from the river Nile left behind thick,black mud. This was the perfect soil for growing wheat,barley and vegetables. Egyptian farmers also raised cattle,sheep,pigs and geese.

Fashion and beauty

Ancient Egyptian women wore eye make-up and lipstick. Both men and women wore jewellery and wigs. Men wore a simple tunic or kilt,while women wore long dresses of whit linen.

Pharaoh power

This pharaoh was called Rameses 2. He ruled Egypt over 3,000 years ago. People believed that the pharaohs were gods living on Earth.

Praise to Amun-ra!

The temple of Karnak is massive. Its priests worshipped a god called Amun-ra around 40,000 years ago. Each New Year they held a big festival there. They killed oxen and offered them to the god.
