Anne Frank: A Light of Hope in a Hopless Time
This paper explores Miep Giess’ book, Anne Frank Remembered, and how that one good-hearted girl has inspired and will continue to inspire millions.
On page ten of Anne Frank Remembered, Miep writes “It seems as if we’re never far from Miep’s thoughts.” This shows Miep’s unwavering devotion and loyalty to her friends, as if she’s thinking, “If I was the one being discriminated against, you would do the same for me.” As seen in the book, Miep is always trying to make the less-than-ideal living conditions the best she can make them, going to multiple stores to try to buy the food and supplies she needs with illegal rationing coupons or and whatever money she had combined with money from the Annexmoney from her own pocket and the Annex’s stash. To them, Miep is a courageous heroine who risks her life for their freedom for nothing in return. This is true in many ways; she is very selfless and thoughtful of others, such as her using her own money to pay for so many people’s necessities. Finally, Anne Frank Remembered shares Miep’s side of the story-what it is like to help those in hiding? Her story informs the world about details of the popular story of the Franks and Van Daans from the other side of that bookcase/door at the bottom of the old, rickety stairs.
Power is not always found in numbers; two people, with the help of others help families, but more importantly make a difference in the whole world– only a few people can make a difference in such a big world, but anyone can be those few people-Miep is just a normal Dutch girl who makes a difference by helping everyone directly, by helping a few, and by sharing the story through two books: The Diary of Anne Frank and Anne Frank Remembered.
