I. France Finds a Foothold in Canada

A. Late to join New World due to war

1. Began after 1598 when some religious toleration was allowed, les strife

2. Louis XIV took interest in colonies

B. Quebec established in 1608

1. Champlain known as Father of New France

2. Friendly with Huron Indians, enemies with Iroquois

3. Controlled by French king

II. New France Fans Out

A. Fur trading main economy; killed beavers

1. Indians helped

2. Beavers hunted out of many areas

B. Jesuits tried to convert Indians, failed usually

C. De La Salle conquered Louisiana

1. Forts established to stop Spain

III. The Clash of Empires

A. 4 world wars between 1688 and 1763

1. Treaty in 1713 gave England new land

2. War of Jenkins’s Ear in 1739

3. King George’s war began after that; England won again but treay gave back Louisiana to France

IV. George Washington Inaugurates War with France

A. 1754 – Washington commanded 150 men in Ohio valley to fight French; later captured and released

V. Global War and Colonial Disunity

A. French-Indian War began in America (7 years war)

1. Germany and England were allies; bloody fighting in Germany but Germany defeated France and its allies

B. Albany Congress failed to unite colonies but helped keep Iroquois on British side

VI. Braddock’s Blundering and Its Aftermath

A. Braddock led 2000 men to conquer Fort Duquesne

1. Indians and French outnumbered but won with ambushes and killed Braddock

B. Washington left to defend frontier

C. English invaded Canada but spread forces thin

VII. Pitt’s Palms of Victory

A. William Pitt became leader in 1757 and conquered Quebec

1. Montreal fell in 1760

B. Britain gained Canada

VIII. Restless Colonials

A. Colonials gained military experience, saw Britain could be defeated

B. British referred to Colonials as cowardly and dirty

C. Colonies were not united still; given 900,000 pounds as compensation to be appeased after war

IX. Americans: A People of Destiny

A. Colonials were freer to roam without French and Spanish enemies

B. Ottawa Indians tried to wipe British in Ohio and almost succeeded

C. Proclamation in 1763 prohibited settlement beyond Appalachian mountains; colonials rebelled and traveled anyway
