Armageddon of the Americas

An observation on a historical belief.

In 1492 Columbus set sail on his voyage of destiny. One which would lead to a discovery of a new world. The fact, that the Vikings, and possibly the Chinese and others, had discovered it before, was not known.

There was conjecture and theorical evidence that the world could be round. If so, then sailing west would be a way to reach the orient. Columbus certainly hoped so.

Believing something and knowing it are two different things. Whatever his belief, Columbus was certainly taking a gamble. If the world was flat, as was commonly supposed, he, and his men, could be sailing right to the end of it, and, worse, beyond.

As it was he landed in the Bahamas. Not that Columbus knew it, but, for all intents and puposes he had discovered a new world.

The years that followed saw a brutal decimation of the indigenous people of that new world and the destruction of the civilizations that had arisen there: An ”Armageddon” of the Americas!

One of the ironies of history is that Columbus did not reach the end of the world, it sailed with him.
