Asian Carp: New Ways to Track Then in The Great Lakes
A lot of people don’t want any more Asian Carp to be in the Great Lakes. THe government is trying to control its population.
The administration of President Barack Obama’s has made a new plan against having more Asian Carp in the Great Lakes. He wants to use a program called environmental DNA (eDNA) in which biologists collect the (eDNA) of Asian Carp that they leave behind in their feces and urine. They then match the eDNA to Asian carp in the Great Lakes.
In a conference call, John Goss, Director of Asian Carp, explained that the President want to use more eDNA.
The use of eDNA was first developed by the University of Notre Dame. Some people are concerned because this is a relatively new method of doing things and their must be a lot of Asian Trout than went pass underwater electrical barriers to get into the Great Lakes, since they have to do so much eDNA matches.
John Goss, Director of Asian Carp, said the 2011 plan will try to use more eDNA testing and better comprehend its results. They also want to make more use of a facility that is already in existence for research in Lacrosse Wisconsin where they could analyze eDNA collections.
This national plan will be in the area around $47 million and will mostly be paid by money in the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative which was started in 2009.
Recently, President Obama’s banned several varieties of an Asian Carp into the United States.

Yes, the Asian Carp are destroying all of the native fish in the Great Lakes. They are a real problem.

The carps become pest. There is nothing more the US govt. can do but eliminate them.
