ATHENS, NOT SPARTA:
- Had a democracy government
- Had a strong navy, with 200 ships at its height
- Citizens were forced into the army for 2 years
- Artistic
- Had arts, theaters, and crafts
- Had an artistic life
- The pour were nourished
- The disabled were helped
- Had theaters
- Boys went to school at age 6
- Were creative
- Their army only defended
- Boys studied reading, writing, and math
- Currency was coins
- Made the Acropolis
ATHENS AND SPARTA:
- Shared the Greek language
- Were powerful Greek city-states
- Had the same religion
- Were close to each other in location
- Had slaves do most of the work
- Citizens didn’t have jobs
- Had a military
- Forced citizens into the army
- Women had few rights
SPARTA, NOT ATHENS
- Had a monarchy government
- Had a strong army (land warriors)
- You were forced into the army for 40 years
- Were very athletic
- Had sports, not arts
- Cared little for new ideas or inventions
- The poor were enslaved
- The disabled were killed
- Women were allowed to participate in athletics
- Had a simple life
- Food was mush and black stew
