Bangladesh’s Geography

Bangladesh is a just a small country in Asia that much people know of, but it has some of the world’s largest and most amazing buildings and places. For example, Bangladesh has one of the largest coastal mangrove forests in the world. Bangladesh is located in Southern Asia, bordering the Bay of Bengal, between Burma and India. It has a small area of 56, 977 sq. Mi (147,570 sq. Km). In the world map it is found 24 00 N and 90 00 E. It is slightly smaller than Iowa. Bangladesh is mostly filled small alluvial plain and hilly in the southeast. The main seasons in Bangladesh are winter (Nov-Feb), summer (Mar-Jun), and monsoon (Jul-Oct). The major cities in Bangladesh are Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi, and Dhaka. Some of the major rivers are Padma, Meghna, Jamuna, Brahmaputra, Madhumati, Surma and Kushiara. The natural hazards in Bangladesh are mainly droughts and cyclones which happen a lot in the monsoon season.

Bangladesh’s People

Bangladesh has a large population of 133.4 people for its small size and is ranked 9th in the world for its population density. Although it may be ranked high in some parts its life expectancy is quite low ranking 184th in the world with 60.25 years in total. In Bangladesh the ratio of boys to girls is 0.93:1. About 47.9% of Bangladesh can read and write. Bangladesh is 98% filled with Bengalis and the other 2% are non-Bengali Muslims or tribal groups. Out of the 98%, 83% are Muslims, 16% are Hindu, and other is 1%. The main languages are Bengali and English.

Bangladesh’s Government

The conventional long form of Bangladesh is People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The type of government in Bangladesh is parliamentary democracy. Dhaka which is located 23 43 N, 90 24 E is the capital. The 6 administrative divisions are Barisal, Chittagong, Dhaka, Khulna, Rajshahi, and Sylhet. Bangladesh first became an independent country in 16 December 1971 when it had finally won. The President of Bangladesh is President Zillur RAHMAN and the Prime minister is Sheikh HASINA Wajed. The Prime minister is the one in charge while the President only signs paper. The currency in Bangladesh is Taka and paisa. 1 taka=100 paisa and $1= 59.55 taka

Economy

The economy in Bangladesh has risen about 5% since 1996. The GDP official exchange rate of Bangladesh is 83.04 billion. The GDP per capita is $1500 (2008 est.). The GDP composition for each sector is 19.1% for agriculture, 28.6% for industry, and 52.3% for services. The labour force in Bangladesh is 70.86 million. The labour force for each occupation is 63% for agriculture, 11% for industry, and 26% for services. The yearly revenues for Bangladesh are $8.831 billion and expenditure is $12.54 billion. The agriculture products are rice, jute, tea, wheat, sugarcane, potatoes, tobacco, pulses, oilseeds, spices, fruit; beef, milk, and poultry. The industrial products are cotton textiles, jute, garments, tea processing, paper newsprint, cement, chemical fertilizer, light engineering, and sugar. Bangladesh’s import partners are China 15%, India 14.3%, Kuwait 8.3%, Singapore 6.2%, and Hong Kong 4.2%. Bangladesh’s export partners are US 23%, Germany 13%, UK 9.1%, France 5.5%, and Belgium 4%.
