Battle of Trenton
About the Battle of Trenton and how the Americans came out victorious.
December 26th marks a victorious night for George Washington and the Continental Army. A cold winter storm blew as Washington prepared a surprise attack on the Hessian Garrison at Trenton.
On Christmas night, Washington and his army rowed across the ice-filled Delaware River preparing to perform a surprise attack. The Continental Army was running low on supplies and many soldiers had no shoes, but this didn’t stop them. They had to march through the snow to get to the Hessian camp. When they arrived at the camp, the Hessians were hung over from their celebrations the night before and were fast asleep which made them easy to sneak up on. The 2,400 troops, commanded under Washington, flanked the sleepy Hessians while they were weak and unequipped with firearms. Washington’s troops achieved total surprise and defeated the British/German force at Trenton with ease.
This victory was the first of the Revolutionary War and it helped to restore American morale.
