Benjamin Banneker: Father of The Clock
Benjamin Banneker: Father of the clock.
Banneker was hired as part of a six-man team, led by George Washington, to help design the new capital city, Washington, DC. This made him the first African-American presidential appointee. When the lead architect threw a temper tantrum and quit, he took his drawings with him. Thanks to Banneker’s photographic memory, he was able to reproduce the blueprints in a few days. The plans he drew were the basis for the layout of streets, buildings and monuments that exist to this day in Washington D.C. Banneker died in 1906.
Before the invention of the clock, time was measured according to the position of the sun, but it was neither precise nor accurate. The invention of the clock has had a major impact on our lives. It is hard to imagine our world today without organized time. Time allows the entire world to be synchronized. It keep us on track at all times and allows us to be organized. Time keeps our lives in order.
Nowadays, the whole world is moving fast and our lifestyle is fast-paced. We wake up at a certain time, and catch buses and trains that run on schedule, hoping to arrive at school on time. We move through the day, attending classes that are timed and then attend scheduled extracurricular activities. At the end of the day, we hope to be home on time for our favorite television shows. We make certain to get to bed at a decent time, so that we can get up on time the following day. Our entire day, every day, revolves around scheduled events. This would not be possible without the clock.
If the clock had never been invented, society would be much different. Trains, planes, shipments, meetings, and appointments all revolve around the element of time. Our world today would not nearly be as efficient; it might even be chaotic! Without a doubt, we would accomplish a lot less. It is essential to our lives that time be accurately measured. The clock is an important part of our modern world and is an invention that we could not live without.
