Book Review of an Utterly Impartial History of Britain or 2000 Years of Upper Class Idiots in Charge by John O’ Farrell

John O’ Farrell presents an entertaining, highly amusing yet informative history of Britain is well worth a read. In fact I laughed my way through it.

O’ Farrell succeeds brilliantly in setting out 2000 years of British and Irish history dominated by at the best mediocre upper class rule as well as the achievements of lower classes. He does not give the rich and landed classes much credit for anything in this very funny tome. It covers the period between the Roman invasion and the end of the Second World War.

This book works so well because it presents history in a completely different light compared to the vast majority of text books. Whilst it runs in event order it has unusual chapter and sub – section headings. For example “The Conqueror’s Sons: Sibling Rivalry Gone Mad”, and “Bad King John the Bad”.
