Caucasus

The activities in the Caucasus had been a matter of great concern to Russian federation, to the point it anticipates a military solution. Russia had just came out of was with Georgia in 2008.

On the 2008 anniversary of Russian –Georgia war, the Deputy Foreign minister, Grigori Karasin, told journalist at a briefing ahead of the first anniversary 2008 Russia – Georgia war, that the United State (USA), had started shipping weapons to Georgia, he said, the delivery of weapons into Georgia, had been noted and observed closely by his country and warned that it would be respond accordingly, to the threat.

It would be noted that the United States (US) backed Georgia, in the war with Russia. The Russian force was able to overpower Georgian forces- since then Russia, had accused the United State to have started re-arming Georgia, a former Republic that broke away from the former USSR.

Russia, had since the break away of republics from the former USSR, been uncomfortable with weapon purchases wither the break away republics, most military agreements are watched with keen apprehension by Russia, especially, any agreement with its former rival during the cold war days, the United States of America and NATO.

Russia may be haunted by the ghost of its activities in the iron curtain. It could not come to terms with the reality that break away republics are independent state, as such should be left to operate as such; sovereign independent Nations .This includes military and defense decisions.

Georgia has the right to alien with any country of its choice, including the United State, despite Russia’s feelings and presumption. Also, countries, world over are supposed to arm its army to protect it territorial boundaries, and Georgia is no exception to this convention and should not be threatened or intimidated to arm it army, as long as it conforms to international laws and convention

Moscow’s flexing of muscles against its former republic may not be the needed solution to peace and security in the black sea, but will definitely break further the republics from its hotel of influence

It is time Russia reconsider its use of crude force and intimidation against its former republics but should resort to the use of constructive diplomacy and make reasonable offer and negotiate with these republics in all facts, economy defense, foreign relation etc.

The US and NATO may be another doors to the break away republics, when Russians doors of constructive diplomacy failed to open. The US especially the present government of president Barack Obama is not an aggressive or military power minded America as such may not be accused to be in a secret mission to re-arm Georgia. Georgia is an independent state that could buy needed arms, within the United Nations Conventions if from an American arms market. Russia had not told the world the class of weapons being shipped to Georgia from America. These weapons that Russia talks about, are they banned or restricted weapons?

Whatever, however, Russia should bury deep of the ghost of cold war days in the graveyard of the past. This building of tension with tough words is the Caucasus is not encouraging and government in Moscow and Washington should be called to caution and avoid the use of their caustic utterances.

It was reported in the New York Times, that two Russian nuclear powered attack submarines had been patrolling of the Eastern seaboard of the United States in a mission which is uncommon after cold war era.

This is quite a provocative action against the territorial integrity of the United State.

Moscow, should understands, before putting its submarine to such military exercise around a super power’s doors, that, it is an aggression that may trouble too many, if a consequential response was addressed.

But Russian officials had taken this action with a pinch of salt, saying it was business as usual for Moscow to keep its Navy in shape and never saw anything strange with the action. Of all waters in the world, it was US waters that Moscow, saw to put its naval fleet in shape. I think that is treacherous and should be condemned as aggression.

I think, also that Russian official should have more internal issues to keep busy with. Russian economy is begging for some urgent, articulated attention. This flexing of military muscles will not put food on the table of its citizen.

Russia is chased by its own shadows, of its internal problems and uses military and foreign polices to shift attention within internal realities.
