Causes of WWII

by shaane in History, September 14, 2007

There are many causes of WWII, however there are three distinctive reasons why the war was started: The signing of the Nazi-Soviet Pact, Hitler’s foreign policies and the Appeasement.

Firstly, with the Nazi-Soviet pact, Germany was more confident it could in the war. That was the reason why it could go on to attack so many other countries. The reason why Russia signed this Pact is because Britain and France never gave the Russian politicians even chance to express their views. For example in the Munich Agreement, the Czech and Russians were supposed to be the two most important countries in the meeting, but were obviously left out. Russia was the direct neighbour of Czechoslovakia, and by placing an enemy beside Russia was a threat to them. This left Russia no choice but to sign the pact. After the pact, Hitler launched his attack on Poland. Unlike other times, Britain and France stood up for Poland, thus causing World War 2.

The appeasement also played a role in leading to the start of World War 2. Germany without much effort got hold of much land due to the appeasement policy. The Britain and French although knew that appeasement simply delayed war; they blindly gave in to Germany’s wanting. Thus, Germany could get all the land it wanted without much effort. This led to Germany’s greed and it encouraged Germany to become more and more aggressive. This also led on to the attack of Poland, and the war was started.

Last but not least, his foreign policies should also be put to blame. In 1934, he remilitarized openly and conscripted. This led to other countries to be on their guard and all started to rearm as well. In 1936, Germany supported Franco in the Spanish Civil War and he tested out his new weapons. At the point in time, the whole world look at the destruction the bombs caused in horror. The next year, the Anti-Comintern Pact was signed by Germany, Italy and Japan. This pact was to pledge that all countries help one another when fighting against communists and this pact was targeted at Russia. In 1938, Hitler forces the Anschuluss with Austria. He the goes on to ask for the whole of mineral-rich Sudetenland, which was given to him. The next year in March, he attacks the rest of Czechoslovakia. Then on 1st September, he invades Poland which leads to the outbreak of World War 2.
