Civil Right’s Movement Targeted The Failures of Reconstruction

This essay proves that the Civil rights movement of the 50’s and 60’s targeted the failures of reconstruction after the Civil War.

Lastly, Reconstruction failed in ensuring blacks equal economic opportunities. Most blacks after the Civil War stayed in the south where they became sharecroppers. The white redeemers ensured that blacks did not succeed economically by shunning them from jobs other than on farms. However, as more blacks migrated to northern urban cities, a sense of unease and unrest grew within the exploited, poor blacks. Finally, throughout 1965, the continued economic inequality caused many riots to erupt in urban cities. This pressure led LBJ to implement an Affirmative Action policy to allow more blacks to attain jobs. Also, in 1964, the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission was created to help bring Blacks on an equal playing field with whites. Thus, the CRM addressed the economic suppression of blacks created by Reconstruction as well.
