Civil War
About the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, and the tensions between the North and the South.
Many event before, during and after the Civil War tensions between the North and the South were increased. These tensions were the start of the Civil War, then many events added to it all to make it worse. The three branches of government, Judicial, Executive and Legislative. All had a part in the increase of tension in the North and the South. Dread Scott v. Sanford, The Emancipation Proclamation and the Passing of the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments.
The Dread Scott v. Sanford court case was a definite tension increase between North and South because the south won in a sense. The Supreme Court ruled that Dread Scott a slave living in a free state still has no rights because he is not an American citizen and will never be. This showed that the Supreme Court was still in favor of the South and the white man. African Americans could not stand up for themselves, no government was there for them and therefore the south had more power and the north was not happy.
The Emancipation Proclamation is two executive orders given by President Lincoln. The first order stated that all slaves in al the Confederate states of America are free. The second order named specific states that must free slaves. This is a gain for the North side, Slaves are free. Now that the slaves are free tensions are increased because slaves were a very big controversy between the North and South. North did not care much for slaves, they were all into industrialization. The South on the other hand had built there whole lives and jobs around slaves, all plantation in the South were run by slaves.
The last of the three branches is the legislative. The people pass the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments. The 13th abolishes slavery, the 14th protects the rights of former slaves and the 15th gives all men and all races the right to vote. This was the end for the South. They could not have slavery anymore and the North won the war. The South had nothing left to do, they lost there chance of keeping slavery legal and this was a requirement for them to come back into the United States. They had to ratify these three amendments.
After many disputes and all the ways that tensions were increased the war started and many more things happened to increase the tensions. The North won the war it was over and slavery was abolished. But the South was still angry at the North and this hatred could even be remembered today by many southerners. The Legislative, Executive and Judicial branches all had an act of the increase in tensions. All people had fought in the war in some way and all had finished it and fixed our country to the way it is now. Hopefully better than during Civil War times.
