Cold War: Space Race and Arms Race
Who launched the Space Race? Why did it become so significant?
The Space-Race was a mid-late twentieth century ‘competition; between the USSR and the US for supremacy in outer space exploration. The race was sparked by an ideological and technological competiveness that led to the pioneering of artificial satellites, orbited human space flight and voyages to the moon. The space race allowed for increases in spending on education and pure research, in turn, accelerating human technological advances that had never been seen before. In addition, it served to increase tensions between America in the Soviet Union, but ended with the eventual cooperation of the two opposing super powers on the Apollo – Soyuz mission.
