Comparison of Writers

A comparison between Benjamin Franklin, Crevecoeur, and William Bradford about their writing styles dealing with the New World, America.

Throughout our reading we have examined the writings of three historical figures all of who have their own opinions about the United States. Firstly there was William Bradford who was one of the leaders of the Plymouth Plantation during the earlier part of the seventeenth century. Next was J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur, who was well traveled throughout North America and certain sections of Europe. Our most recent texts have come from Benjamin Franklin who was one of the greatest scientific minds of the time in which he lived. These men have many ideas about the new world, and have all experienced it through varying points of view.

The main subject that can be compared and contrasted between them is their experiences with America and how this affects their views and ideals. William Bradford for example, was the man in charge of a larger group of people from a Separatist Church hidden in the Netherlands. This man was constantly under the pressure of his peers and was left in charge of making the crucial decisions that lead to the future of his crew. We can see this stress in his writing when he describes the new landscape as a harsh and almost unforgiving place. Similarly, Crevecoeur had a large amount of experience dealing with Europe and specifically Great Britain. His writings focus mostly on the positive aspects of America, and how life in this country could be very rewarding if someone was willing to work hard. Not only this, but he is frequently heard comparing England to the United States. Differing from the other two, Benjamin Franklin had much more experience in America and also had the mind to really think things through. He has several sections of literature that almost explain the situation from the standpoint of the native people. He makes it his job to be sure that everyone involved in America gets their voices heard and shows what they think in a fair manner. We see that based on one’s past and what they have had a chance to witness, a person can have considerably differing opinions than others.
