Day Ten: Bp Gulf Oil Spill is Worst Environmental Disaster in Decades
A tragedy beyond comprehension.
For the last few hours, I have been reading through articles and commentary about the Louisiana coast oil rig disaster. The reality of the situation is starting to sink in. This is a tragedy that I can’t even completely comprehend right now. While we watch the updates through our chosen news source, things are getting worse by the second. Damage is being done on so many levels that it is hard to focus on the big picture.
The big picture is that a part of our country, a part of our hemisphere and planet, has just been poisoned. And in comparison to this disaster, we are floundering fools. We do not have the means to control, contain or stop the oil that is spewing into the ocean. At this point, the most promising news is that BP wants to put a massive dome over the area that is spewing oil. Only problem…the dome doesn’t exist, they’re building it now and it will be weeks before it could possibly be completed. This is our solution. I’m less than thrilled and/or relieved.
My sarcasm is only a facade for the sadness that has over come me. Other than 911, I can’t say that anything has caused the reaction I feel right now. Its an empty, sad, blank, gut sinking feeling. When you know that no one can do anything to stop what is happening and what is about to happen. Helplessness.
The loss of life, whether it be dolphins, shrimp or amoebas, is unimaginable. As a human, I feel utterly responsible.
But let me tell you how I also feel. I feel like something else is going on here. I am starting to have a hard time believing an accident like this could happen without provocation. And if it could, things are even worse than my conspiratorial mind can imagine.
This incident will end up affecting everyone in this country, and beyond. The coastal areas anywhere near this oil, are ruined, for decades. All life in these waters will be annihilated or changed forever. Crazy high gas prices in an already sinking economy? I can’t even imagine. The fishing industry that supplies a huge portion of the United States? It is gone. What about the people that live near the coast? What will happen in the summer when the temperature and humidity rise? What kind of air pollution will result from this?
My mind has been blown. Please comment and share you’re feelings about this. Please link me to your articles about this. Especially with any ideas or links that would promote helping this situation.
