- What is a truth commission? A commission tasked with discovering and revealing past wrongdoing by a government.
- When and why was the Chilean truth commission established? Established in 1990 after the president lost the referendum in 1998.
- What were the four goals of the commission? To establish as complete a picture as possible of human rights violations under the Pinochet regime; to gather evidence to allow for victims to be identified, to recommend reparations, and to recommend legal and administrative measures to prevent a repetition of past abuses.
- What made the job of the commission difficult and why was it widely criticized? It was never supported by the military. It received little funding and was supported by NGO’s.
- What was the legacy of the truth commission- what did it do for the victims? What were the consequences for the military? What did the commission do for the Chilean people as a whole? The victims received a pension of 5000 dollars a year. The military received a overhaul including the dismissal of many military officials. Sixty eight percent of Chileans approved of the commission. The commission restored public trust in the government.

The painting is a picture of two people possibly naked hugging each other. One looks to be a woman hugging and possibly kissing a skeleton. It is a very strange piece.

It is someone telling death a figure of some sort to go away and leave her alone. The figure death is telling the person that they are not there to punish or to harm the person but rather they want to possibly be friends.
- By naming his play “Death and the Maiden”, Dorfman was alluding to the ideas in these other works. Given your research, what can we expect Dorfman’s play to be about? What will the mood be? I think we can assume that the play will be about death and a woman. We can also assume that the play will be dramatic style due to the music piece. Due to the poem we can assume that death will be pursuing a woman.
