Disgruntled Military Retirees Fight for Commissary

Military retirees fight for their perks, as well they should. They served the country in peace and war. Promises were made and those promises should be kept. We owe our military. A grocery discount is little enough reward for their years in the service of the country. North Georgia has thousands of military retirees and they didn’t intend for their commissary to be closed.

Retirees from the military were more than a little upset when notified that the Fort McPherson commissary was closing. North Georgia’s thousands of military retirees didn’t intend to take it lying down. The commissaries save retirees a mint of money. Letters were written, email sent, and tweets went wild. Everyone got involved and the powers that be didn’t close the commissary. Retired Lt. Colonel Starley T. Roehl has shopped there since he retired from the Air Force in 1968. His wife, Mary said the closing announcement spawned hoarding on their recent shopping trip to Fort McPherson. People were buying everything they could possibly carry.

A new commissary to be built at Dobbins Air Force in Marietta was approved in 2009 but hasn’t as yet been funded. Georgia congressmen lobbied to keep the McPherson and Gillum commissaries open until the $23 million commissary could be built at Dobbins. It was agreed to keep the McPherson commissary open for one year, but didn’t commit to staying open until the commissary is built at Dobbins. Sen. Johnny Isakson said, “Not having a commissary in North Georgia is not acceptable.”

Some retirees say they cannot handle driving to to Robins Air Force Base located in Augusta or to Fort Benning, located near Columbus, to buy at those commissaries. One of the main perks of military retirees is the commissaries where they can depend on a military discount. Retired Lt. Col. Craig Allen, who lobbied to keep the commissary open, said the military retirees receive a 30 percent discount and it’s a big savings. “We go to Publix and Kroger and we can’t believe how much everything costs.”

Don’t take away their commissary, they’re entitled.

If the commissary has to be closed, it’s better for the Government to issue some kinds of discount card so that the military retirees can buy things in many other places like they were once in commissary.

They do not think of the retirees, when it will be their turn they will realize.
