Austrian history is really interesting and it’s full of interesting happenings and dates. It would take you a lifetime to learn everything about Austrian history but just a small part of it would be enough to make you really interested.

Before this area became a part of the Roman Empire it was occupied by Celtic tribes. After that it did belong to the Roman Empire for many years and when the Empire fell, Austria was invaded by Bavarians, Avars and Slavs. In the year 996 we first saw the name Austria, but written in a different way. As you can see you’ll be able to read more about ancient times in the Austrian history.

In the middle of the 1800th century Austria was in compromise with Hungary and Austria-Hungary was ruled by Franz Joseph I. It stayed as a union until World War I, which started in 1914 when the Archduke Frans Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo.
