Do Carrots Really Help You See in The Dark?
A bite-size answer to the question: Do carrots really help you see in the dark?
Do carrots help us to see in the dark? In a word, no!
Many of us grew up being told that we should eat our carrots because it would help us see in the dark. Unfortunately, it’s not true. Now, don’t get me wrong, eating carrots can be good for our eyes. Carrots are high in a natural chemical called beta-carotene which is converted into vitamin A by our bodies. A lack of vitamin A can lead to poor vision and, in extreme cases, can cause a malfunction of the tear ducts leading to blindness. They are also rich in antioxidants, minerals and dietary fibre.
So where did this myth come from? Well, believe it or not, it was started by the British Intelligence services during World War II. The legend came about during the Battle of Britain when rumours were circulated that British RAF pilots were fed copious amounts of carrots to help them see in the dark during night-time raids and missions. But it was all basically a plot to try to help cover up the discovery (and use) of radar technology from the Germans! The myth has endured to this day.
