DVD Review a History of Britain The Complete Series Simon Schama
This DVD contains all three series of Simon Schama’s excellent A History Of Britain first broadcast by the BBC between 2000 and 2002.
Part One – Standing At The Edge Of The World 3000 BC to 1603
An excellent examination of Britain from the Stone Age through to the end of the Tudor dynasty. Schama evaluates the impact of the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, the Celts, the Romans, the Saxons, and finally the Normans.
He also evaluates the impact of individuals like Edward I, Robert the Bruce, and William the Conqueror.
Part Two The British Wars 1603 to 1776
This part deals with the build up to the English Civil Wars, that conflict itself, the Interregnum, the Restoration, and the Glorious Revolution. It then explores the Hanoverian dynasty, the expansion of the British Empire and then the loss of the American colonies.
The End of Empire 1776-1965
The last DVD covers the zenith of the British Empire, the defeat of Napoleon, the Victorian Age, the First World War, and the Second World War. It finishes with the immediate post – war period and British efforts to find a role after the end of empire.
This is a great documentary about British history.
