Dynastic Korea
Chu Suk is a time were people all over Korea travel to visit their Ancestral sites. Chu Suk is one of the greatest Korean festivals.
At the arrival of the memorial site families bow to their ancestors and talk about everything from family concerns to the ancestors welfare Also the older family members tell stories to the younger ones, so they will also remember and always follow in the same path. This is a time for families to become closer to each other.
After the service is done families eat the prepared food and celebrate. But most important is that the lesson learned is to pay respect to their elder’s and having a thankful heart towards other people
And serve drinks to the winning side.
They wove the cloths from hemp plants, which grow throughout Korea. Before it could be used for making clothes the hemp and steam it in a pot. Then take it out and place it in a pot of fresh spring water. After the hemp had been dipped in the cold water they would take off the outer layers and split the plant. With the separate pieces from the hemp plant they took the strings and put them on a spinning wheel. After that the strings were put on a spinning wheel. Doing this was very difficult and took a long time to do. The pressure was on to become the winning team.
Within one months time the king and queen would decide which team was better at weaving. Although the outcome was for the winner to be served by the losing team, everyone enjoyed the feast prepared from the losing team, as well as celebrated with songs and dance. There was one exception that the losing team had to perform a traditional song. The title of he song that had to be performed was Hoe So, Hoe So. This song has a very sad and sorrowful meaning. As time went by bits of the song was changed and the songs name was changed to Hoe So Gok. From this special event that King You Ree had requested started the beginning of a 2000 year old festival named Chu Suk. Chu Suk was founded on August 15th.
Part of Chu Suk is called Kang Kang Sue Wol lae. Kang Kang Sue Wol lae starts the night before Chu Suk.
