The industrial revolution brought about a gradual increase in the size and scope of manufacturing establishments that was accelerated by the demands for war material generated by the Civil War.

Now the advent of mechanical power, complicated machinery, and extensive factory buildings called for large amounts of capital and, to an increasing extent, for more competent managerial personnel. Large companies began to appear and the dominance of the corporation began to emerge. So the effect of the industrial revolution was bringing about a far-reaching change in business organization.
