Eight Facts You Never Knew About World War Two

Eight interesting facts about the famed war.

  1. Hitler was a vegetarian, a non-smoker, and a non-drinker

  2. Heinrich Himmler, the leader of the Nazi SS, once farmed chickens

  3. During WWI, Benito Mussolini, an Italian dictator, was opposed to the Central Powers
  4. British leader Winston Churchill was nearly shot down by his own troops. First, his aircraft went off course and passed dangerously close to enemy anti-aircraft guns (his first encounter with close death in this situation). After that, as the plane went back on course, British radio operators detected his aircraft as an enemy bomber and multiple RAF fighters were sent to intercept and destroy his plane. Luckily, these fighters couldn’t find his plane.
  5. The Soviets had dogs that were specifically trained to destroy tanks. Explosives were strapped to them and they ran underneath the tank. The explosives were triggered and the tank was destroyed (unfortunately taking the dog with it too). About 25 German tanks were destroyed using this method. Sometimes this plan went wrong, though, seeing as how the dogs were trained using Soviet tanks and they often ran underneath those tanks instead.

  6. The heaviest tank ever built weighed 192 tons, but wasn’t finished in time to be used for combat

  7. The 2nd Polish Corps used a brown bear named Wojtek to help transport supplies and ammunition
  8. The Nazi salute was only used after Hitler’s attempted assassination in July 1944

The Nazi salute was used before 1944 – but only during parades by the citiziens of Germany and the SS-Troops.
In 1944 the army (Wehrmacht) was forced to use it – they didn’t before.

Read it in “Die verdammte Pflicht”, by Alexander Stahlberg.

8 Is false. The salute was always used when German officers met hitler. Hitler also has a phobia of germs and didn’t like shaking hands, hense why he used that salute instead.

    6. The tank was never built.. It was designed but not even a prototype was made. I have a copy of the drawings in my room in fact. It mever went beyond design stages.
