Emancipation Proclamation Signed by Abraham Lincoln Sold for $3.7 Million

A copy of the Emancipation Proclamation with the signature of President Abraham Lincoln was sold for more then $3.7 million dollars.

A copy of the Emancipation Proclamation with the signature of President Abraham Lincoln was sold for more then $3.7 million dollars to an anonymous buyer, an auction record for a U.S. presidential document.

The 1863 document that declared that all slaves would be “forever free was previously owned by Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

Senator Robert Kennedy bought the document while on the campaign trail for his older brother John F. Kennedy in June of 1964. He paid $9.500.

Only 24 of the 48 printed copies said to have been signed by President Lincoln are known to survive and 10 of those are owned by private owners.

Fourteen are in the public domain according to a spokes persons at Sotheby’s. The original copy of the Emancipation Proclamation is in the national Archives.

Lincoln also held the previous record for Presidential papers. His victory speech after re-election was sold auctioned at Christie’s in 2009, it sold for more then $3.4 million.
