Reasons Why Explorers Came To North America

1.      To find the Northwest Passage to the Orient, or the Land of Spices.  Explorers thought that in the Orient, rare commodities such as gold, spices, and silk and other riches were everywhere. They wanted to go and strike it rich.

2.      For treasures. In North America, goods such as slaves, gold, cod fish, and other riches were ripe for the taking. Countries wanted to get wealthier, so they sent explorers to North America to plunder, steal, rob, find, discover, etc.

3.      To colonize and control more land. Countries always wanted to get more land as this would mean that they would eventually become more powerful.

4.      To trade with natives. Natives sometimes had objects Europeans desired, such as fur coats, which were popular in Europe, so explorers traded for these objects.

5.      To expand their knowledge. Europeans wanted to discover just how big the earth was, map out more lands and oceans, etc. and to become smarter.

6.      To convert people to Christianity. Christianity was the dominant religion in Europe, and many rulers wanted to convert everybody to Christianity.

7.      To find the fabled Fountain of Youth. People thought that the Fountain of Youth would make one young again.

8.      For adventure. Explorers often came for the thrill of the voyage.
