- British Empire – The British Empire is the largest empire in history of the world. In 1922, the British Empire was at its highest point covering an area of 33.7 million km² approximately one-fourth of the world. There is a saying that “the sun never sets on the British Empire” because the sun was always shining on at least one of its numerous territories at that time.
- Mongol Empire – The Mongol Empire is the largest contiguous empire in the history of the world. Mongol emprie emerged from the unification of Mongol and Turkic tribes in Mongolia and grew under the leadership of Genghis Khan in 1206. At its greatest extent, it covered an area of 33.0 million km² in 1279.
- Russian Empire - The Russian Empire existed from 1721 until the Russian Revolution of 1917. It was the successor to the Tsardom of Russia, and the predecessor of the Soviet Union. It is the second largest contiguous empire of the the world. In 1866, it covered an area of about 22.8 million km2.
- Union of Soviet Socialist Republics – The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was existed from 1922 to 1991. This was the successor of the Russian Empire after the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the Russian Civil War of 1918–1921. The USSR was a union of several Soviet republics with Russia as its largest and most populous state. At its greatest height, it covered an are of 22.3 million km2 in 1945. The soviet union was dissolved in 1991.
- Spanish Empire – The Spanish Empire was the first empire that started the Eropean colonialism that started in the age of discovery. Spain emerged as a unified monarchy in 1492. In the same year, Christopher Columbus started the first Spanish voyage across the Atlantic Ocean and discovered the America. In 1740 at its zenith, Spanich Empire covered an area of 19.4 million km2.
