Five of The Worlds Greatest Love Stories
Throughout History There Have Been Many Love Affairs Whether in Life Litrature or Mythology Most of Them Tinged With Tragedy.
ADAM & EVE
If we are to believe the bible, then this couple must be the original lovers. God created the world and all that goes in it, then he made man in his image, he created Adam from the dust, and then breathed life into his nostrils God then created the Garden of Eden and told Adam to take care of it. Adam tended the garden and looked after all the animals, but after a while he felt lonely being the only one of his kind, God took pity and while Adam slept he took a rib from Adam and made Eve all was well for a time that is until Eve was tempted by the serpent, to eat from the tree of knowledge, once the sin had been committed Adam and Eve became mortal, and the rest is history
ANTHONY AND CLEOPATRA
Surely this is one of the greatest and most tragic love stories of all time. Anthony met Cleopatra in Alexandria and fell in love with her in doing so he neglected his soldierly duties and the domestic problems of Rome. Anthony is ordered back to Rome to help fight Pompey, Cleopatra begs him not to go but he does. While in Rome he is persuaded to marry Octavia the sister of Octavius, thinking the marriage would cement the bond between the two generals. On learning of the marriage Cleopatra is furious, and takes a terrible revenge on the messenger, Cleopatra is placated when she knows the marriage is political, and not a love match, Anthony returns to Alexandria and crowns himself and Cleopatra rulers of Egypt. Time passes and Octavius the former ally of Mark Anthony, challenges him to a sea battle Anthony accepts the challenge and Cleopatra pledges her fleet to aid her lover, but the battle is not going well for Anthony, and Cleopatra flees with her fleet, followed by Mark Anthony who left his army to their fate, Anthony is ashamed of what he has done, but forgives Cleopatra and vows to fight Octavius again for her honour. The second is on land and starts well for Anthony but once again the battle goes to sea and Octavius is victorious as once again Cleopatra flees with her fleet in the heat of the battle. Anthony is furious and vows to kill Cleopatra for her treachery. Meanwhile Cleopatra hatches a plan to win Mark Anthony and she sends word to him that she has committed suicide, she then locked herself in her monument and waited. On hearing the news that his lover is dead Anthony tries to kill himself, but only succeeds in wounding himself, then he hears that Cleopatra is in fact still alive, and has himself taken to her, only to die in her arms, distraught Cleopatra commits suicide by taking the poison of an asp, she died in Ecstasy thinking that she would be reunited with her lover in the afterlife.
