For Over Three Years, There Was Stalemate. Then, in 1918, There Was Considerable Movement. Why Did These Changes Happen So Quickly?

GCSE History essay answering the question: For over three years, from the end of 1914 to early 1918 there has been very little movement on the western front. Then, in 1918, there was considerable movement as first the Germans advanced, and then the allies counter attacked. Why did these changes happen so quickly?

The allies counter attacked after the German offensive to fight back and put themselves back into place in their trenches. The USA arrived and made them stronger. The counter attack from the allies was successful because the USA brought with them fresh supplies and advanced technology such as tanks and planes, which were used to push the Germans back. Their supplies were near them unlike the German troops’. The allies had worked on a well thought plan using tanks to cut up the German lines with foot soldiers following to fight and take over the enemy trenches.

Concluding from the above we can see that Germany within 1918 grew stronger believing they had the upper hand to defeat the English. This gave them a sense that an offensive would be a good idea because overall both sides wanted an end especially the Germans. In both nations there was lack of food and rationing, which lead to starvation of civilians. This lack of food and resources was due to the reliance of imported produce and with the war of the Atlantic not many supplies came through to each country. To add to the starvation and lack of reserve the British put the pressure on the Germans by blocking their ports so even less could get through. Due to the suffering within Germany citizens threatened revolution as they needed an end to the war. Even those at home suffered as towns were bombed. Both sides were desperate for an end but Germany more so, I believe and that is why they started an offensive, if it were successful with their newly gained forces and end to the war may be soon. However with the American troops to soon back up the English, the war came to a soon end but not within Germany’s favour. For the German’s to win they would have to have fought an endless battle, which they were not in a position to do considering lack of supplies, and less troops than her enemies after the US joined the war.
