Four of the Most Famous Dogs of 20th Century

by Rodallega in History, April 25, 2008

Dogs are incredible creatures. They can be more loyal than many people. According to zoologists, to understand the basis of this loyalty, we have to feel and think like a dog. Here are four of the most famous dogs of 20th century. Can you feel and think like them?

Blondi

Blondi was the dog of German dictator Adolf Hitler. He was given to Hitler as a gift by Martin Borrman. He was a typical German Shepherd dog. Blondie had lived with Adolf Hitler until his death. After his death, Blondi was killed by physicians with a cyanide capsule.

Lassie

Lassie was a movie star. He played in numerous movies, TV shows, radio programs, and even books. He was the favourite animal movie star in the 1950s and 1960s. He starred in Painted Hills, The Sun Comes Up, Lassie, Magic of Lassie and many Lassie series.

Laika

Laika was the first dog in space. She was launched by Russian spacecraft Sputnik 2 on November, 1957. However, it was a great disappointment when she died because of stress and overheating problems inside the rocket. Scientists officially announced that Laika died because of a malfunction in the thermal control system. In 1980s and 1990s, several movies were made by in memory of Laika.

Pickles

In 1966, the World Cup in Central Hall was stolen by burglars. The Football Association hired detectives to find it. But, by chance, a dog named Pickles sniffed out the stolen cup. Later, David Corbett, Pickles’ owner, was rewarded by the Football Association.

Four? I mean, I recognize two of them, I guess hitlers pooch is famous in some circles, while pickles is known to three jocks and well, now you. So I am going to take a wiled guess here… You chose four because you found four. Four ‘of the most famous’ doesn’t really make much sense when only two is really famous though. So yeah, cool idea for an article, but get back to us when you have researched the topic and come up with a nice and significant number like, oh say, seven or ten or something. Four isn’t a list, it’s an act of desperation.

My daughter researched Hitler this year for a history assignment and I learned of Hitlers love for his dog. This was news to me and here in your article, it has come to my attention again! I’d forgotten about the space dog too, nice work.

Well composed and good info too! But what about Hector, what about Horand, what about Rin-Tin-tin… can you please put an one liner note on the War dogs too? Though we do not know them by their name individually, at least we can remember them once. An incredible number of 48000 GSDs were enlisted by the German regiment in the World War I and man of them were taken from their most loved owners forcefully. They devoted their lives in the war. They are all famous… all heroes.

We can’t forget Booger too, the male Pit Bull Terrier, who opened a new dimension in the world of science. He was the first cloned dog.

Please check out my dog blogs… I share my little of knowledge that I have gathered during these years of staying with them:

    I enjoyed the article, dude.

To be accurate, though, “Lassie” was not a movie star but was a fictional character who was played by multiple dogs over the years. Lassie was first played by a dog named Pal, and Pal was bred with numerous females so that he would have similar looking offspring who could then play Lassie when Pal was too old or had died. Lassie was *always* played by Pal or one of his descendants until the 1990s. (Benji, on the other hand, was always played by the same dog, whose real name was Higgins.)

I look forward to seeing more like this.

I enjoyed the article. See, you even mentioned dogs that I’d never heard of like Pickles and Blondi. I’d heard that Adolf Hitler did had a soft spot for dogs and I knew he had one I just didn’t know the story behind it. So, thanks for the info. The only reason I could think of for a longer list is that once you start reading interesting facts about these animals you want to keep going. I think a whole book of short articles on famous dogs would be cool. Thanks again!

well Blondie was a German shepherd dog woman. And to be correct she died shortly before Hitler’s suicide. The cyanide was testet on her… :(
His secretary Traudl Junge said about him: “Hitler had his greatest pleasure when Blondie could jump a few centimeters higher, he said that the aquitance with his dog was the best relaxation”

It’s sad that although Blondi was the one living being that hitler seemed to love, the poor dog ended up as another one of his victims. It just goes to show that hitler had absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever.
By the way, Blondi was poisoned before hitlers death (to test the cynadide capsule) not after.
