George Modelski’s: Cyclical Political Theory
I express my position on George Modelski’s cyclical political theory. Then I state how WWII was a continuation, or sequel, to WWI, rather than a separate event.
In light of the thinking behind George Modelski’s thoughts on cyclical political theory, I believe that WWI and WWII were more like a part one, part two scenario (Modelski, 1985) Due to how damaged the economy, pride, and the effected lifestyles of so many countries from the aftermath of the first ordeal and so many issues that were not resolved, a sequel if I may was bound to follow. The first war caused an extreme amount of debt for the America it was a major reason for the Great Depression, for Europe it fueled Germany’s motive’s to retaliate. (Hopkins, 2003)The first war also showed some countries true colors such as Britain not announcing their stance, or side of who they would back up, and America failing to honor the Treaty of Versailles.
It’s unfortunate that something as destructive as another world war had to bring us out of the dark aftermath of World War I put us in the position that we felt we had to handle it the way we did. With that being said are we in the motion of repeating these events currently, considering Desert Storm and our current so-called “War on Terror?”
