Greatest Inventions: The Printing Press

The average European citizen always thought of books like the modern equivalent of good cars, filled with opportunity but too hard to reach, until the invention of the printing press.

The printing press is the greatest invention because it allowed the mass production of books, which led to widespread learning for every class. The printing press was first invented by the Chinese, but it was first used in the 15th century, invented by Johannes Guttenburg. Before the printing press, books were very expensive and took a very long to write out by hand. This all changed with the invention of the printing press.

The printing press allowed “books to be made like water from a broken [pump],” causing widespread learning and advancements in society. This was the first time average citizens could afford to buy books and learn. Therefore, the average European could learn to read, becoming more educated and intelligent. In addition, authors became rich people because more copies of their books could be printed. Reading was also a source of entertainment too. This great advancement in learning caused a large rush of new ideas since the famous people of the past could have their books published in mass quantity and more people could read and learn from the books. All education after the invention of the printing press relied more on books than on people and there could be many more schools. The printing press was one of the best advancements in human society and it benefited the people in many ways.

The printing press is a great invention in many ways. The ability for it to produce books in large quantities quickly helped the world advance quick and become more educated. Even today, the printing press is still in use, just in a more advanced fashion. Even though television and computers have been invented, books are still the most reliable source of information. Without the printing press, humans might still be living in the country and the majority of the population would be illiterate. This is why the printing press is the greatest invention.
