Hammurabi Code vs. Hebrew Covenant Code
Look and be amazed by the western civilization at it’s finest.
At a personal level I am a pacifist and would simply choose the non violent/fatal method to nearly any situation, and however, despite how harsh the Code is, I do not agree. I can see and recognize the basis around the Code, the eye for an eye, foot for a foot, life for a life, concept going, for example, decree 144, “If he [a man] break another man’s bone, they shall break his bone.” Although this concept may seem like the most logical solution, revenge, I do not believe it right, like they say, you don’t fight fire with fire, it only makes more fire essentially two wrongs don’t make a right. Sometimes that’s not even the case, for example, the he first decree, “If a man bring accusation against another man, charging him with murder, but cannot prove it, the accuser shall be put to death.” For one thing, this does not even match what one man is suspected of doing, and also is it that much of a burden that you will kill a person for wasting your time? Not only does this encourage one to not turn someone in at fear of falsehood or lack of evidence, but it gives the murderer more incentive to kill. I personally am not going to kill a man because he suspected a man of killing another man however was wrong or could not prove it, at most sentence him to a week or month in jail at most. I believe that if they had a jail or prison like now a days it would be a much more appropriate action to take, rather death but time spent locked up. I also believe however that this law code is such a sigh of progress for the civilization because it is the basis of rights and equality do to one as you do to another and that kind of stuff. At this point it is where you can tell progress and advancement is occurring, establishing liberties and rules, forming an established civilization in which function can occur.
Both codes seem to place a high level on discipline and respect for others. The two codes think a like I believe in terms of what the consequences are for particular actions and the result is quite often the same. Supporting this statement I would like to point out the consequences for one of the most basic actions being the murder of another man. Both the Hammurabi and Hebrew Covenant Codes states that the result of one man slaughtering another man, the man found guilty for killing is sentenced to death. However as similar as these two codes are they are different. For example the Hammurabi codes states that one who is found practicing the art of stealing or theft is to be sentenced to death however the Hebrew code points out that crop growers and such are not to pick or take up all their crops and that to leave some for homeless or poor neighbors or people, and how the Hammurabi codes is all about a profit, the Hebrew codes states that one is not to request interest on a loan he may give. This brings us to the basis of each the codes and we can tell are not only similar but different as well. The Hammurabi Code I feel is about getting the most they can out of something the easiest way, they are about getting back at those who have done wrong for the sake of getting back. I feel as though the Hebrew code is more based around a peaceful and giving community and provide punishment where punishment is needed not for the sake of punishing but to teach a lesson, and set an example. I believe the Hebrew code places a higher value on life.
