Frank Buckles celebrated his 110th birthday on February 1. Family members reported that the veteran’s health has deteriorated in the fall. According to relatives, Buckles died of natural causes.
At the recruiting station Buckles went in April 1917. During the First World War, the man was a driver in France and Germany and rose to the rank of Corporal.
Between the world wars, being an employee of White Star Line, which once belonged to Titanic, Buckles traveled around the world. In 1941 a man was in the Philippines during the seizure of the islands by the Japanese and spent three years in captivity. Only in 1945, he was freed during a raid by paratroopers.
Most of his life Buckles lived in West Virginia. In late 2009, he served in the U.S. Senate in support of the bill giving the memorial in memory of those killed in World War I American soldier’s national status.
In recent years, Buckles also received wide acclaim through the works of Michigan photographer David DeJong, who filmed it as part of its project on the recent all living veterans of WWI.
