Henry Ford – a Great Inventors of The World
by Henry ford was an American industrialist. He was an inventor who pioneered the mass production of the Automobile. His assembly-line methods revolutionized all of American industry.
He was born on a farm near Dearborn, Michigan. He received little schooling. He enjoyed tinkering and worked as a machinist. He opened his first automobile factory in Detroit in 1903.
At that time cars were made by hand in much the same way horse-drawn carriages had been made. One or tow men slowly and carefully made each part as it was needed, fitted them together and worked until the carriage was complete.
Ford saw this as wasteful. He broke ach step in car-building down to its simplest operations. He then assigned men to do these jobs. He supplied them with parts and the cars quickly took shape on a conveyor belt that moved fast each man doing his special job.
In 1908 Ford began producing his “Model T” a car that became known worldwide as the “Tin Lizzie”. Some 15 million of them were sold up to 1927, after which more modern cars were produced.
Thorough Ford’s success was quickly followed by other firms, he stayed ahead of them. He cut his company’s working day from 9 to 8 hours and began paying his employees s $5 a day instead $1.50 or $2 they could receive elsewhere.
Ford also differed with other stockholders in the Ford Motor company and eventually he bought them out. This measure gave him the total control of the largest business concern.
The company did more than just build cars. It mined its own iron and coal, made its own steel, rolled its own glass, and also opened a network of smaller manufacturing and distributing business.
In 1932, the first V-8 internal Combustion Engine went into the Ford cars. During World War II, the company built bombing planes at a special factory in willow Run, Michigan. He Ford family retained tight control over the firm when its founder, Henry Ford retired.
Later it became a publicly owned corporation, though it is still headed by Henry Ford II, grandson of the founder.
Members of the Ford family set up the Ford Foundation in 1936. by carefully spending millions of dollars earned through the company, the Foundation has become one of the worlds largest and well known philanthropic institutions.
