Heroification of President Eisenhower

Faults in the Eisenhower Administration.

In Lies My Teacher Told Me by Loewen the concept of horrification is introduced, and President Eisenhower’s good image was a result of that. There were actually many faults in his administration, which lead to a tense situation with the Soviets, and social unrest at home.

Eisenhower was unable to prevent the massive social unrest throughout the nation at the time. During the beginning of his first term as President, he did not question the authority of the Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy, despite knowing he was fabricating the scheme. If President Eisenhower prevented Joseph McCarthy from reaching the heights of his power, the lives of hundreds of Americans would not have been destroyed. Furthermore, President Eisenhower was not as active as he could have been after the Brown vs. Board of Education supreme court case. Eisenhower claimed it was his duty to comply with the Supreme Court decisions even if he did not agree. Eisenhower could have undermined many efforts in the South if he would have fully supported the Supreme Court.
