History Notes
An empire for slavery.
Another reason for the failure of industrialization was the fact that agrarian ideas still glowed vividly, people thought that god intended for humans to be farmers not factory workers, and that the farmers were good people.
The Southerners then went into the idea that agriculture was for them and that someone had to work for them and they were the North, their productivity increased, wealth increased, and the costs increased. And in 1860 the southerners invested more of their money in slaves and land.
Cotton prices increased by more then 50 percent and the cotton crop consequently doubled and every farmer attempted to put their acres to cotton, this lead to less food supplies, and the Southerners were no longer King Commerce but King Cotton. And the southerners became the most prosperous people on earth.
De Bow’s Review moved in the direction of agriculture once again and the politicians took over the commercial conventions. Also, “the main form of commerce they now advocated was a reopening of the African slave trade”
Federal law had banned slave trade, although there was a bit of smuggling on a small scale, the Southerners felt their rights were being violated and that they should be allowed to buy slaves.
Not all Southerners wanted slaves back though, even a few prosperous ones didn’t want slave trade back because they liked the high value of slaves. And many southerners were secessionists who wanted the south to be its own nation.
De Bow became African Labor supply Association formed for the purpose of bringing in “apprentices” from Africa.
Lamar tried to bring slaves from Africa by sending a couple of ships and got hundreds of slaves. He then sold them and made an enormous profit, however he got caught and tried and passed and aquittal because they believed he suffered enough from the newspapers. The North were angry with this and the South called the North hypocrits.
