History of Elbert County, Georgia
My home county.
Land belonging to Cherokee and Creek Indians in 1773, became Elbert County, Georgia. Elbert County was established in 1790. Named for Governor of Georgia and a noted general and war hero in the Revolutionary War, Samuel Elbert. Georgia’s favorite heronie, during the American Revolution, lived in Elbert County near Broad River. Wauhatchee Creek is said to bear the Indian name of Georgia’s War Woman, Nancy Hart.

By 1810 the county had a wagon works, 3 bark mills, normal blacksmith shops, distilleries, grist mills and 2 gun powder mills. Early development of the granite industry sustained Elbert County in the midst of the Depression, in 1933 the county was debt free. The town expanded, justifying the town’s boast that it was ”The Granite Capital of The World”. Elbert County has granite quarries and manufactures. More than 250,000 granite memorials are manufactured in Elbert County annually and shipped throughout the United States.

Two state parks: Bobby Brown State Park and Richard B. Russell State Park. Two U.S Army Corps of Engineers lakes: Clarks Hill Lake and Russell Lake. Russell Dam. The Georgia Guidestones.
