History of Electricity: Part One

The history of electricty.

Although electricity goes back before 1900, it is still used and improved today. In the year 600 B.C., Thales of Miletus found that when you rub amber together with silk it attracted feathers and other small things. He discovered what we call today static electricity.

There are no other recorded documents about electricity until the year 1600. In this year William Gilbert discovered that there is a very big relationship between magnetism and electricity.

In 1705 Francis Hauksbee made the first neon light. He did this on accident by putting mercury in a glass globe and taking the air out, when he did this in the dark it glowed.

Many people are taught that Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity, this was not so, all he did was discover that lightning is a form of electricity.

There are many more but I’ll skip to some more recent ones ( 1980 and on).

  • 1980 – first wind farm was made.
  • 1984 – tidal power was made
  • 1985 – first electricity company
  • 1999 – Electricity is sold on-line
