History of Ghana Africa

A short complete history of Ghana.

Archeology shows that there has been human activity in Ghana since 1500 BC, but there is no indication that those beings were ancestors of the people that live there today. Native tribes have been living in Ghana since the tenth century AD.  Due to contact with other Africa tribes and Europeans, many kingdoms rose and fell for hundreds of years.

In 1821 Great Britain took charge of the area that is now Ghana and in 1902 it became a British colony known as the Gold Coast. The British used their colony to their advantage. They constructed a railway to the coastal interior eventually boosting the economy. Also the colonial government established boards to inspect the management of schools. Later, after Britain controlled the Gold Coast for many decades, Ghana regained power in 1957 becoming the first to become independent in sub-Saharan Africa. The Gold Coast changed their name back to Ghana when they took independence to symbolize them being the first black African nation to gain political independence from Europe.

Since achieving their independence Ghana has not put their country to waste. Unlike other African countries Ghana has an abundance of fertile ground, making Ghana a large agricultural country.  While gold is Ghana’s principal mineral, bauxite, manganese, and diamonds are also very important, providing a large income.  Ghana takes advantage of their water sources and uses them for fishing, also making an income when those are exported. Throughout its early ages, colonial and modern history, Ghana has made its mark in Africa.
