History of Mothers’ Day

The background of the holiday.

With mother’s Day just around the corner, I thought it would be interested to discus the origins of this holiday. Unfortunately the actually origins of mothers day are quite uncertain, as the practice of each culture is unique. References to Day set aside to honour ones Mother dated as far back as ancient Greece.  However It is know that the modern day traditions associated with Mothers day was set down by Anna Jarvis.

Anna Jarvis was born in west Virginia in 1864. Her mother passed away in 1905. On the second anniversary of her death (1907) Anna held a memorial for her mother. Later she began he quest for a common public day to be set aside in honour of mothers everywhere.  In 1914 the she succeeded and the second Sunday of May was dubbed ‘Mother’s day.’

The Andrews Methodist Episcopal church, in which the first mother day was held, was turn into the International Mothers Day Shrine was soon after Anna achievement.

Happy Mother day every one.
