How The Recession is Encouraging Communism
The results from the recent German elections saw the Free Democrats winning by a wide margin. However, there was also a strong showing for the Die Linke party, who traces its roots back to Communist East Germany.
While the Social Democratic party had the worst showing ever recorded in postwar history, another party made whooping gains. Die Linke an extreme left party earned 12 percent of the vote. Two decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall the distinction between West and East Germany is still showing. This result comes as both major parties were criticized for vague policies and campaign platforms, Die Linke showed a strong stance where they were the only party to take a stand on Afghanistan calling for the immediate withdrawal of all German forces. The force that truly drove the votes to the left, are the disaffected workers who would want a better economy, where there isn’t such a economic distinction between rich and poor. Die Linke’s motto “Wealth for All” certainly appealed to these poeple. In East Germany there is still an uncomfortable feeling about the free market, and some people were frightened by the implications of the recession so they are now supporting Die Linke. One laid-off worker told the BBC:”People are frightened that the gap between the rich and the poor is growing wider.
