Humayun was the eldest son of Babur and succeeded his father as a ruler of India in 1530. He belonged to Mughal dynasty, which ruled Afghanistan, Pakistan and North-eastern part of India from 1530-1540 and again from 1555-1556. Humayun’s half brother Kamran Mirza got the territories of Kabul and Lahore.

Kamran did not hem Humayun in the battle against Sher Shah, instead sided with the later. Humayun was defeated by Sher Shah and had to seek asylum from the Persian ruler.
Humayun’s life is chronicled in a book known as Humayun-Nama, by his sister Gulbadan. In which she has elaborately described how Humayun forgave his brothers. She also describes the torture punishment given to his Kamran Mirza.
During the wars with Sher Shah Suri, Humayun used to send messengers to Kamran, but Kamran severed their heads and sent it to Humayun. Some messengers were even hanged in front of his fortress.

Another brother Hildani, who served as right hand to Humayun was cut into pieces by Kamran. Humayun wanted to teach a lesson to Kamran and the opportunity came on the 7th day of Ramadan in the year 1553. When Kamran was defeater in a war and was captured.
The men in Humayun’s court Amir, Mufti, Imam and Kazi gave Kamran death sentence, which Humayun did not agree. Instead he wanted to disable Kamran, so that he may not come to war again.
The punishment was carried out by Alidost along with 5 soldiers. Two of them held Kamran’s legs, and two held his hands and one held a cotton cloth in the mouth. Alidost took two big needles from his bag and pierced each eyes of Kamran 50 times. Then he poured lemon juice with salt in to the blood oozing eyes of Kamran.
Humayun then sent his blinded brother to perform Hajj at Makkah, where he died in 1557.

Though Humayun managed to get his kingdom back in 1555, he couldn’t rule for long. One day while coming down from his library, he slipped and fell down the stairs. He suffered massive injuries including a skull fracture. He died in 1556.

Sad that so much of history is constantly repeated
generation after generation…. peace the one thing
they all crave, some more than others.

Interesting as a historical piece where power was far more important than family.

Thanks for the story. Will you please present a story from the history of the Moghals which we may allow us to learn if there is any instance of peace and nonviolence shared or favored by these royal people?

The mogul dynasty that ruled India is replete with such examples. Really terrible. Violence begets violence. Reap as you sow. What can one say?
I saw your weebly website as well. Looks very good. Well done.

I still don’t get it why people can be cruel to their own brother/sisters. Royal life in the past was so tricky.

I am presuming that Humayun fell from the Din-I-Panah and died after which Akbar took over. Please correct me if I am wrong. Anyways, it is a very informative article and a nice share. Thanks!
